The mission of the Rhonda Walker Foundation is to empower inner city teen girls towards becoming strong, confident, successful, and moral future leaders. We encourage everyone to visit her website.

Staff members and students of Consortium College Preparatory High School took part in the "Making Strides Against Breast Cancer" walk on Saturday, October 15th. Led by our business manager Shavonne Brown, cheerleading coach Crystal Smith, and social worker Rachael Hatcher, the CONSORTIUM CELEBRATING SISTERHOOD team earned over $2,500 in the fight against breast cancer. Thanks to everyone who participated or donated!
Consortium High School is joining in an effort to prevent people from texting while driving. We are participating with DATT (Drivers Against Texting & Talking) to raise awareness of how dangerous this practice really is.
Traffic crashes related to distracted driving are the leading cause of death and injury for teenagers in Michigan. Many fatalities involve young people from 16 to 25 years old. This is something that should alarm all families who care about safety. That's why we're getting involved.
Rachael Hatcher, our school social worker, is leading the campaign at our school. She says, "This is a very important issue. We hope that parents will speak with their children and encourage them to take the pledge. Let's all stop texting while driving."
Because of the hard work by our teachers, students, and parents, Consortium College Preparatory High School has received the 2011 Michigan Emerald School designation.
Our students and staff have completed at least 15 energy saving and environmental tasks. Nancy Gregor, Wayne County Michigan Green School Co-coordinator, wrote: "The efforts you made to complete the tasks are very impressive. I urge Consortium College Preparatory High School to continue with the energy saving and environmental tasks and hope you encourage others to follow."
Students actively participate in a school-wide recycling program. They discuss alternative energy in their science classes. We have had visitors from the Sierra Club, speaking about endangered species. There will be a recognition ceremony to be held later this spring, and Consortium also received a banner to be displayed in front of the school. We are the first Leona Group school in Wayne County to earn this honor.
If you are the family of a Consortium student, don't be surprised if you receive an automated telephone message from the school. Our office manager Shavonne Brown has started using a service to call parents with important announcements.
For example, she might want to remind you about parent-teacher conferences. She might want to notify you in case of emergency. The system records her voice and calls your house with the message.
What can you do to receive your CCPHS voicemail? Please make sure that your contact information is up to date in our office. If you change phone numbers, remember to tell the school. Thank you!
p.s. The automated message will only start playing after you say "Hello" (or anything else). That's when you'll hear Ms. Brown. Don't just wait without saying a word, because the robot is more patient than any human.

A PROUD DAY
Consortium College Preparatory High School has received the prestigious "Web Site of Excellence" Award from The Leona Group. This is a great honor, considering the extremely high quality of all the school sites! The beautiful crystal plaque contains these words from Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes:
"Greatness is not in where we stand, but in what direction we are moving."
Consortium College Prep Middle School has been a participant in the Middle School Michigan Government Conference for the past four years. Our students have been recognized for outstanding achievement three of those years. This year, Mariah Smith (grade 8) and Shereta Spearman (Grade 8) formed this year's top negative team of the middle school conference. Here at Consortium, we pride ourselves to academic excellence and a diverse learning experience. Our success at Michigan Youth in Government has proven that these are not just words, but words put to action. Thank you to all of the staff that help make our Contemporary Issues debate team a success.

Mischa Toland, a nationally-known expert on the subject of bullying in schools, will address the students of Consortium College Preparatory High School on April 6-7th. She comes to us from Greatness Now. Her topic is "Bullying Awareness." Ms. Toland is a motivational speaker, an accomplished author, and an expert on human development. She has worked in the nonprofit sector, the for-profit sector, the juvenile justice system, and the educational system for over 20 years. She has spoken at countless conferences and has written 17 books. We are very excited to hear her message about this important topic. Bullying affects students, families, and schools. A large percentage of American kids have been bullied by their peers at some time in their lives. Even President Obama recently disclosed that he was the victim of bullying as a child. Ms. Toland brings a message of understanding, self-affirmation, and hope that young people will grow up in a positive way. We welcome her to our community.
