Our school had a very special visitor today.  Rhonda Walker, the morning news anchor of TV station WDIV, came to Consortium to meet with three exceptional students: Kyah Bracy (9th grade), Derricka Moore (11th grade), and Kayla Bracy (11th grade).  The mission of the Rhonda Walker Foundation is to empower inner city teen girls towards becoming strong, confident, successful, and moral future leaders.  We encourage everyone to visit her website.

Consortium High School is joining in an effort to prevent people from texting while driving. We are participating with DATT (Drivers Against Texting & Talking) to raise awareness of how dangerous this practice really is.

Traffic crashes related to distracted driving are the leading cause of death and injury for teenagers in Michigan. Many fatalities involve young people from 16 to 25 years old. This is something that should alarm all families who care about safety. That's why we're getting involved.

Rachael Hatcher, our school social worker, is leading the campaign at our school. She says, "This is a very important issue. We hope that parents will speak with their children and encourage them to take the pledge. Let's all stop texting while driving."

Because of the hard work by our teachers, students, and parents, Consortium College Preparatory High School has received the 2011 Michigan Emerald School designation.

Our students and staff have completed at least 15 energy saving and environmental tasks.  Nancy Gregor, Wayne County Michigan Green School Co-coordinator, wrote: "The efforts you made to complete the tasks are very impressive.  I urge Consortium College Preparatory High School to continue with the energy saving and environmental tasks and hope you encourage others to follow."

Students actively participate in a school-wide recycling program.  They discuss alternative energy in their science classes.  We hascsve had visitors from the Sierra Club, speaking about endangered species.  There will be a recognition ceremony to be held later this spring, and Consortium also received a banner to be displayed in front of the school.  We are the first Leona Group school in Wayne County to earn this honor.

If you are the family of a Consortium student, don't be surprised if you receive an automated telephone message from the school.  Our office manager Shavonne Brown has started using a service to call parents with important announcements.

For example, she might want to remind you about parent-teacher conferences.  She might want to notify you in case of emergency.  The system records her voice and calls your house with the message.

What can you do to receive your CCPHS voicemail?  Please make sure that your contact information is up to date in our office.  If you change phone numbers, remember to tell the school.  Thank you!

p.s.  The automated message will only start playing after you say "Hello" (or anything else).  That's when you'll hear Ms. Brown.  Don't just wait without saying a word, because the robot is more patient than any human.

A spelling bee can be just as exciting as a championship sports event.  Just ask the 55 talented students from 11 Leona Group schools who competed recently in the Midwest Spelling Bee.  The event included schools from Michigan, Ohio, and Indiana.  The event was very exciting as the last duo of spellers battled to the very end.

Big-time thanks to Tamasha James (Co-host), coordinators Shavonne Brown, Darlene Corbin, Jeff Fett, Joe Wrone, Madalin Kaltz; Special thanks to the judges who judged like they have been judging all of their lives: Barbara Barrett, Nina Jackson, April Mcghee, and Mary Lou Van Antwerp. Some details were handled by three Consortium seniors: Ashlee Pierson, Kevin Williams, and Krystal Williams.

Special thanks to the Leona Group's CEO Dr. Bill Coats as well as our local supporter and entrepreneur David Rammouni, who each provided which entirely paid for all of the prizes and food for the participants and guests. The top 10 competitors received some very nice prizes and awards. All 55 participant received a special gift bag, certificate, and t-shirt.
